String Theory School of Music was founded in 2017 by Amy Leigh who took the last $6,000 from her teacher retirement account to launch the business. After negotiating their first space, they renovated it to keep costs low and began building the foundation of what would become a thriving creative hub.
Over the years, String Theory has continued to grow and evolve. The business purchased and renovated its building from the city through a successful partnership, solidifying its presence in New London. Despite challenges, including the pandemic, String Theory has thrived, bolstered by a passionate community of creative people. The company has grown into a true home for its founders and team and continues to build on the positive energy that it was founded on.
How Women's Business Development Council Helped
String Theory received a New London/WBDC Small Business Grant in 2022 and used the funds for technology updates that would enhance the studio’s recording and streaming capabilities. More recently, Amy was among the first recipients of WBDC’s Accelerate Grant. She plans to use the grant’s $25,000 to fund the installation of a vocal booth with a microphone and preamp. This expansion will nearly double the studio’s capacity, increasing teaching rooms from five to nine. The growth plan requires minimal building impact while expanding both recording and educational services.
As String Theory continues to expand its offerings, including new spaces and services benefiting the surrounding community, the business is poised for the next phase of growth. Through hard work, resilience, and strong partnerships, String Theory has firmly established its place in New London, with exciting plans ahead.
Of the support the business has received from WBDC, Amy said, “We wholeheartedly recommend that businesses dare to think creatively and share that vision with the WBDC. Their support has been an incredible blessing.”
