The Backstory

“Don’t complain about the problem, Mom. Be the solution,” said Melissa-Sue John’s then nine-year-old daughter when Melissa lamented about the lack of diversity in children’s books.

As a result, Melissa-Sue and her daughters, Olivia Lauren and Alyssa Simone, established Lauren Simone Publishing House in 2017 to create children’s books that feature diverse and multicultural characters that can better connect with readers.

To date, 44 youth and adult authors have published 36 books through Lauren Simone Publishing House. In addition to providing a platform for creative individuals, the company assists with all aspects of the publishing process, including editing, storyboarding, and marketing.

How Women's Business Development Council Helped

Melissa did not initially plan for Lauren Simone Publishing House to be a business, but as it grew, she began using resources available through organizations like WBDC. She received a WBDC Equity Match Grant (now Ignite grant) in
2022 and used it to revamp her marketing efforts and the company’s website. Melissa-Sue says WBDC’s Business Advisors also helped refine her marketing to better define her services and create a user-friendly web presence.

“Working with WBDC has been transformational. I’ve learned more about myself as a business owner, been given valuable advice and resources from WBDC mentors, and networked with other female business owners. I’ve been given myriad opportunities and access to local government officials. It’s truly been a blessing!”
